FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How accurate is the US Navy method?
The US Navy circumference method has an error rate of about ±3-4% compared to DEXA scans. It's reasonably accurate for tracking trends over time, but individual variation can be significant.
What is a healthy body fat percentage?
For men: athletes 6-13%, fitness 14-17%, acceptable 18-24%. For women: athletes 14-20%, fitness 21-24%, acceptable 25-31%. Essential fat (minimum for survival) is 2-5% for men and 10-13% for women.
How do I measure my waist accurately?
Measure at the narrowest point of your torso (naval level for the US Navy method), horizontally, after exhaling normally. Don't suck in or push out.
What is lean mass?
Lean mass (fat-free mass) includes muscle, bone, organs, water, and connective tissue — everything that isn't fat. Higher lean mass improves metabolism, strength, and overall health markers.
